Alumni Obituary – William “Bill” Jacob Marcellus

Hoisington, Kansas – William “Bill” Jacob Marcellus (CC ’67) of Hoisington, KS passed away November 29, 2019, at Salina Regional Medical Center, Salina, KS. He was 72. He was born November 28, 1947, in Emporia, KS. Bill married Donna Mearl Dyer in December 1977 at Hoisington, KS.

After graduating from Central College, Bill studied at Phillips University in Marburg, Germany for his junior year. Bill earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in music education from Emporia State University in Emporia, KS. He began his teaching career teaching high school vocal music in La Cygne, KS. After moving to Hoisington, he taught vocal music in grade schools. He spent 16 months in Kericho, Kenya teaching music at Kenya Highlands Bible College. He returned to Hoisington and worked in Great Bend, KS for the Big A Auto Parts office. Bill returned to teaching and taught band and vocal music in the Lewis, KS and Wilson, KS grade schools and high schools. After school consolidations, he worked as an accountant for APS in Great Bend until he retired. Bill continued to play piano for the Hoisington public schools, the organ for several area churches, was a substitute teacher and taught piano lessons. He enjoyed collecting stamps and coins, and flower gardening with Donna.

Survivors include his wife, Donna; three daughters, Donita Donovan (Darrel), Hoisington, KS; Veronica Ludwig, Olmitz. KS; Florina Burns (Daniel), Puebla, Mexico; a sister, Margaret Hanson (Bill), Emporia, KS; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a son-in-law, Bob Ludwig.
