Players Named Scholar-Athletes

McPherson, KS - June 04, 2008 - Central Christian College is proud to announce that the NAIA has named Brandon Dicks, Jake Mays, and Cameron Singhisen (all Juniors) as 2008 Daktronics-NAIA Baseball Scholar-Athletes.

The scholar-athlete program recognizes excellence in the classroom while competing in the sport of baseball and is handed out annually to the most outstanding student-athletes in the NAIA. This year's list contains a 190 student-athletes.

The criteria for the award is as follows: receipient must be a junior or above in academic standing, have a cumulative 3.5 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale and have been in attendance at the nominating institution for one full academic year.

Dicks, Mays, and Singhisen were also named 2008 National Christian College Baseball Scholar-Athletes, and 2008 MCAC All-Conference Scholar-Athletes. The Tiger Baseball program as a whole boasted an overall culative average of over 3.0 for the spring 2008 semester.

Catcher Jake Mays Earns Post Season Honors

    Sophomore catcher, Jake Mays just keeps raking in the honors after an outstanding season at Central Christian College.  He was selected by the region NCCAA coaches as the 1st team All-Region catcher!  Jake threw out 32 runners attempting to steal this spring, had a fielding % of .980 and had only one pass ball in the 41 games he caught!  "He is in a class all by himself and he worked hard in the offseason to improve his pop time and his bat speed," according to 1st year head coach Bob Marsh.  Mays improved his average by over 40 points in the last three weeks of the season against the toughest opponents on the schedule and finished hitting .291 and led the team in stolen bases with 13 stolen bases.  Mays has been also named MCAC All-conference 1st team catcherand MCAC Scholar All-conference.


Players Named MCAC ALL CONFERENCE


     Central Christian College soph. catcher, Jake Mays from Colorado Springs, CO  was named to the MCAC All-Conference Baseball 1st team selected by the MCAC coaches.  Mays joins an elect group of 19 players.  He led all catchers in the conference with a .980 fielding percentage, only 1 passed ball in 42 games, and threw out 32 runners attempting to steal.
     The sophomore captain raised his average over 40 percentage points going into the last three weeks of the season while facing the toughest conference opponents and hit .291 with 20 runs scored, 32 hits, 3 doubles, a triple and a HR.
  Mays also led the team with 13 stolen bases, a phenomenal feat according to Coach Bob Marsh.  "Often Jake would catch all four games in a conference weekend series and in spite of all that work behind the plate, he still hit the ball well, run the bases well and blocked everything in the dirt possible. He had a dream season both offensively and defensively and this award is a tribute to how hard Jake Mays works every day!"  Mays also is an NAIA Scholar-Athlete in Cross Country in the Fall on top of playing baseball! 
     The Tigers also had two other players named honourable mention all-conference in freshman 1B Sam Carr who led the Tigers in hitting with a .308 average and 3 HRs, and senior 2B Robert Trujillo Jr. who was a mainstay in the infield with a fielding percent of .967, participated in 20 doubleplays, and hit .279.
